Onslow News: Groundbreaking for Onslow Radiation Oncology

August, 2010

About 200 guests attended the groundbreaking ceremony for a long-awaited radiation-oncology center Aug. 11 at Onslow Memorial Hospital.

Onslow Radiation Oncology will operate as a joint venture between Onslow Memorial Hospital of Jacksonville, N.C., and Vidant Health and Vidant Medical Center.

The 9,790-square-foot center, to be based in Jacksonville, will cost more than $7 million, including construction and medical equipment. It is estimated that construction will take about one year, with the center opening for patient care in late 2010 or early 2011.

The primary benefit provided by this facility will be realized by local cancer patients and their families. Currently, cancer patients who are prescribed radiation therapy must drive long distances across county lines to receive needed treatments. These treatments occur on a daily basis and often last as long as seven consecutive weeks, draining physical, emotional and financial resources.

An estimated 240 patients will receive treatments at Onslow Radiation Oncology on an annual basis by its third year of operation.
